How to Pay the IRS and California (FTB) Online
IRS
- The amount due is May 17th, even if you file an extension.
- Go to: https://www.irs.gov/payments
- Click on Bank Account (Direct Pay) —you can pay with a credit card/debit card for a fee.
- Click on Make a Payment
- Reason for Payment: Balance Due
- Apply Payment to: Income Tax – Form 1040
- Tax Period for Payment: 2020 —or correct year if paying a prior year.
- Click Continue
- From here you will need to input basic information about yourself.
FTB (California)
- The amount due is May 17th, even if you file an extension.
- Go to: https://www.ftb.ca.gov/pay/index.html
- Click on Bank Account—you can pay with a credit card/debit card for a fee.
- Click on Use Web Pay personal
- From here you will have 2 screens to input basic information about yourself.
- Select a Payment Type: Tax Return Payment
- Follow prompts from there.
2021 Estimated Tax Payments for Individual Taxpayers
How to Pay the IRS and California (FTB) Online
Estimated tax payments for 2021 also go by the names “quarterlies” and “prepayments”.

- Dues dates of Estimated Tax Payments:
- April 15
- June 15
- September 15
- January 18, 2022
- Go to: https://www.irs.gov/payments
- Click on Bank Account (Direct Pay) —you can pay with a credit card/debit card for a fee.
- Click on Make a Payment
- Reason for Payment: Estimated Tax
- Apply Payment to: 1040ES (for 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ)
- Tax Period for Payment: 2021
- Click Continue
- From here you will need to input basic information about yourself.
FTB (California)
- Due dates for CA Estimated Tax Payments:
- April 15
- June 15
- January 18, 2022
- Go to: https://www.ftb.ca.gov/pay/index.html
- Click on Bank Account—you can pay with a credit card/debit card for a fee.
- Click on Use Web Pay personal
- From here you will have 2 screens to input basic information about yourself.
- Select a Payment Type: Estimate Tax Payment (Form 540-ES)
